PERSONAL INJURY
Cauda Equina Syndrome
Cauda Equina Syndrome is a medical emergency which occurs when nerves in the lower spine become compressed.
Cauda Equina Syndrome is often caused by a herniated disc; a traumatic injury arising due to a road traffic accident, trip and fall; spinal lesions or tumours, spinal stenosis, infection, or due to a congenital condition.
Cauda Equina Syndrome requires urgent medical treatment. A delay in diagnosing and treating the condition by way of surgical decompression can result in permanent damage to include: paralysis, chronic pain and/or loss of bowel and bladder control.
If you presented to your doctors with any of the following ‘red flag symptoms for Cauda Equina Syndrome,’ but you were not urgently referred for further investigation and treatment, and you have subsequently suffered lasting injury, you may have a claim for medical negligence:
-Spinal surgery resulting in nerve compression-Incorrect positioning of screws during spinal surgery resulting in nerve compression-Failure to diagnose and treat a spinal abscess-Lumbar puncture resulting in injury to the spine and nerve compression-Mismanagement of degenerative disc disease in the spine-Failure to properly interpret an MRI scan demonstrating signs of Cauda Equina Syndrome
