Garda Receives Compensation for On-Duty Gun Injury

Garda Wins Workplace Injury Claim After Gun Accident | Brigid O Donnell Tipperary Solicitor

A Garda who sustained a serious injury when his submachine gun accidentally discharged in a patrol vehicle has successfully settled his workplace injury claim in the High Court.

Brigid O’Donnell, Tipperary Solicitor with offices in Cork and Limerick, acted on behalf of the injured Garda, achieving justice after a prolonged legal battle.

The incident occurred in July 2019 while the Garda was manoeuvring inside a patrol car. His weapon became caught in his bulletproof vest, firing a round into his ankle and causing significant injury. He underwent surgery, physiotherapy, and was out of work for 18 months.

The State initially denied liability and claimed contributory negligence. However, the Garda was eventually awarded compensation when liability was admitted and the case resolved.

Brigid O’Donnell, an experienced workplace injury solicitor in Ireland, represented the Garda throughout the proceedings, ensuring his case was handled with care, respect, and expertise.
